Summary: "A melodrama with overt influences of Soviet cinema is considered as the first rural film. An adaptation from Selma Lagerlöf s novella, Tösenfrân Stormyrtorpet (1908) and Swedish director Victor Sjöström's eponymous film of 1917, the film set the precedence for rape, pregnancy and abandonment stories. An 18-year-old maid, Aysel is raped by the feudal landlord and she delivers a child. As a young woman with sound judgement, she files a paternity suit and demands alimony, but withdraws her claim to save the father of her child from the embarrassment of lying at court. Despite its pretentious approach to rural life, the film was very popular, which could be attributed, along with Ertuğrul's meticulous attempt at realism, the mastery in framing, lighting and imaging, to the employment of skilful voyeurism. The 'fountain eroticism', depiction of young women discussing men freely or flirting with them while fetching water and the ritual of the woman washing the feet of the man coming from the field soon became staple motifs, although the latter has remained controversial as a possible interpretation of the slave status of women (Dönmez- Colin 2004: 32). The most remarkable aspect of the film is the performance of
Cahide Sonku, a former theatre actress. The film launched Sonku as the first star of Turkish cinema. The scarf she wore as A ysel is said to have started a folkloric fashion. A remake was made in 1969 by Zafer Davutoğlu from a script of Osman F. Seden."

The film is introduced as a "Village Story" (Bir Köy Hikayesi). This is one of pioneers of what is later going to be called the genre of "village films."

The author is credited as
Hasan Cemil (Cambel) who mainly adapted Selma Lagerlöf's novella
Tösen fran Stormytorpet. The novella was also filmed by Victor Sjöström in 1917. You can watch Sjöström's film
here and compare with Ertugrul's version.
The non-credited script writer is Mümtaz Osman, a pseudonym for famous poet Nazim Hikmet.

This is Muhsin Ertugrul's 12th film with Ipek Film. Between 1922-24 he shot six films for Kemal Film.

Sound Engineer: W. Morhenn

The film opens with some establishing shots of the village where the heroin Aysel lives. The actual village is Calikoyu in Bursa, Uludag.
The song is "Dök Zülfünü Meydana Gel." The English translation of the lyrics are:
open up your hair, come to the center
ride your horse like a king
bring your music to the meeting
you're the nightingale, you're the rose garden
i'm in love with you for such a long time
my heart is ready for you, why don't you come
you took my name in vain
you burned me with your fire
i long for you a thousand times
you're the nightingale, you're the rose garden
i'm in love with you for such a long time
my heart is ready for you, why don't you come
did you break the bond between us
did you break the glass of friendship
don't let me suffer from separation
you're the nightingale, you're the rose garden
i'm in love with you for such a long time
my heart is ready for you, why don't you come
